“Sheik of Araby” New Orleans and Social Organization revision #2

The most important musical component regarding social organization in New Orleans is focusing on the community spirit. Ultimately, it is essential to investigate the musical legacy of the Crescent city and focus on who makes the music.

First of all, when looking at a song such as “Sheik of Araby”, it is important to look at it’s musical sonic elements. Kid Clayton’s version is certainly inspired by Dixieland 1920′s style jazz. The “Sheik of Araby” has a extremely fast tempo as well as classical/jazz instruments-banjo,clarinets, trumpets and percussion. This song certainly plays tribute to one of New Orleans greatest musical geniuses–Mr. Louis Armstrong. “The Sheik of Araby” brings joy to the listener as a result of it’s happy and upbeat melodies.
Louis Armstrong is a great example of New Orleans musical spirit. Although he is known for popular songs such as “What a Wonderful World” and “Hello Dolly”, Louis Armstrong signifies much more than just an artist of pop songs. He is a jazz master musician who is known for his improvisational trumpet music. According to the book “Musical Gumbo”, “At the time of his death in 1971, Louis Armstrong was mourned and eulogized not only by blacks but by people of every color the world over. Few legends have worn that mantle with more humor and grace. His contributions to popular entertainment were so enormous that even now, it is hard to write about Louis Armstrong without sounding hyperbolic. Still those contributions are as real today as they were fifty years ago. “Americans unknowingly, live part of every day in the house that Satch built,”wrote critic Leonard Feather. It is fitting to leave the last observation to a fellow musician. “I’m proud to acknowledge my debt to the Reverend Satchelmouth,” Bing Crosby once said. “He is beginning and the end of music in America” (Pg. 58, Lichtenstein).
The “jazzy” and dancelike magic of “The Sheik of Araby” pays tribute to the spirit of New Orleans. The Crescent City was the birthplace of Satchmo! Even though Kid Clayton’s version of “The Sheik of Araby” was recorded in 1952, the music is reminiscing back to the 1920′s era! This is a astounding piece of music and it is very apparent how important New Orleans jazz meant to Kid Clayton’s band. The Crescent City will always be known for it’s musical creativity and uniqueness. The legacy of Louis Armstrong embodies the musical spirit and community of New Orleans!
Secondly, the participatory and celebratory nature of “The Sheik of Araby” is very consistent throughout the entire recording. What amazes me is the culture of New Orleans. This recording embodies the unique culture of New Orleans Jazz. With a fast tempo and “sweet harmonies”, this song is a instant classic! New Orleans is a melting pot of musical diversity. That’s what makes New Orleans so special. Louis Armstrong had such a special presence about him and when anyone listens to his music, they can feel the magic!
In conclusion, by recognizing the power of community in New Orleans, one can realize why New Orleans is so special! The Crescent City is a legendary musical city with a history of musical legends! Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong’s music have certainly influenced musicians such as Bing Crosby! His music will continue to live on forever!
